Seljuk Monuments to Visit in Cappadocia: Sarıhan Caravanserai

Located in the Damsa Valley, Sarıhan Caravanserai was built in 1249 during the reign of Sultan İzzeddin Keykavus II, or perhaps by him. It is considered the last example of Seljuk caravanserais, as no others were constructed after it. Often referred to as “Saruhan” or the “Silk Road Caravanserai,” this structure served as a critical stop for traders and travelers during the Seljuk era.

The Sarıhan Caravanserai is a magnificent example of Seljuk architecture, featuring intricately designed stone carvings and a grand entrance. Seljuk Monuments to Visit in Cappadocia: Alaaddin Mosque

Perched on Alaaddin Hill, this is one of the oldest Seljuk structures in the region. Construction began during the reign of Sultan Rükneddin Mesud I and was completed under Alaaddin Keykubat I. The mosque’s courtyard houses the tombs of several Seljuk rulers, including Mesud, Kılıç Arslan, Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev I and III, Rükneddin Süleyman II, and Alaaddin Keykubat I.

Seljuk Monuments to Visit in Cappadocia: Çavuşin Old Mosque

Believed to have been led by its first imam, Hafız Derviş, Çavuşin Old Mosque is the second-oldest mosque in the area. Initially covering 35 square meters, it was later expanded to accommodate a growing congregation. The mosque features a minaret in the Seljuk architectural style and was reopened to visitors in 2011 following a meticulous restoration.

Commissioned in 1335 by Seyfeddin Sungur Ağa, this mosque features a striking wooden minbar with mother-of-pearl inlays. The minbar inscription credits the mosque’s construction to Master Hoca Ebubekir, under the orders of Sungur Bey. Combining Islamic and Gothic design elements, the mosque originally had twin minarets. Though damaged by a fire in the 18th century, its historical essence remains intact.

Among the Seljuk masterpieces in Cappadocia, Sultanhan stands out. Built in 1229 under Alaaddin Keykubat I, the monument’s inscription credits architect Muhammad bin Havlen el Dimashqi. After being severely damaged in a fire in 1278, it was restored by Governor Seraceddin Ahmed bin El Hasan. Sultanhan remains an awe-inspiring example of Seljuk caravanserai architecture with its massive arched gate and fortified walls.

Located in Damsa Village, this mosque dates back to the Karamanid era. Its intricate geometric borders are a testament to Seljuk craftsmanship. However, the mosque’s original beauty has been marred by modern whitewash. Its wooden mihrab, created using walnut inlay techniques, is now preserved at the Ankara Ethnography Museum. It holds significant importance as one of the few surviving examples of historical wooden mosque elements.
