Located within the boundaries of Şahinefendi village, the Sobesos Ancient City is a captivating archaeological site in Cappadocia. Şahinefendi is an ancient village, situated approximately 23 kilometers from Ürgüp district center, and built on volcanic terrain. The discovery of some ruins in this area was initially accidental. Upon examination, these ruins were identified as part of an ancient city dating back to the 6th century. When first uncovered, it was thought to be the capital of the Kingdom of Cappadocia. However, due to the lack of scientific evidence, this claim was later dismissed. The name “Sobesos” originates from the city known as Swassa during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Excavation Work at Cappadocia Sobesos Ancient City

Excavations in Sobesos began in 2002 under the supervision of the Nevşehir Museum Directorate and concluded in 2005. In this three-year period, significant parts of the city were uncovered. However, the entirety of the ancient city has yet to be revealed. Therefore, periodic archaeological projects continue to organize excavations in the area.

Among the remarkable finds are 1,500-year-old mosaics, featuring distinctive motifs like swastikas, crosses, and meanders. A 400 m² meeting hall adorned with mosaics and supported by columns was also unearthed. During these excavations, a tomb chamber containing a male skeleton wrapped in a shroud was discovered. Additionally, a 6th-century chapel and a Roman-era bathhouse were brought to light. These features are open to visitors of Sobesos Ancient City, offering a glimpse into its historical and cultural richness.
